Dental implant surgery is not painful during the procedure because it is performed under local anaesthesia, which fully numbs the area. Honestly, most patients walk in expecting much worse. You feel pressure, some pushing around, not pain. Mild soreness shows up afterward for a couple of days. Usually less than what people remember from a regular tooth extraction.

According to Dr. Glenn Mascarenhas, Implantologist and Prosthodontist at a leading Dental Clinic in Malad, Mumbai,“Nine out of ten patients tell me, on their way out, that they wish they’d done it five years ago instead of putting it off.”

What Happens During Dental Implant Surgery?

Recovery from a dental implant is usually uneventful for most patients. Discomfort is mild, manageable, and limited to the first few days.

  • First 24 hours: Soreness kicks in once the numbness fades. Cold pack on the cheek, take the prescribed painkiller, and you’re fine.
  • Day 2 to 3: This is when swelling peaks. Stick to soft foods. Dal-rice, khichdi, anything mashed. Most people are back at the desk by now.
  • Week 1: Pretty much done with the soreness. Stitches dissolve on their own or come out at follow-up. Eating gets easier each day.
  • Long term: Once it’s fully healed, you forget which tooth was the implant. Zero pain, zero awareness. Just a tooth.

What Does Recovery After Implant Surgery Actually Feel Like?

A few key factors decide which option fits you best. Bone health, condition of the neighbouring teeth, budget, and how long you want the result to last.

  • Good bone, one missing tooth: Implant, almost every time. The teeth on either side stay clean and untouched.
  • Neighbours already need crowns anyway: Bridge becomes a fair pick. You’re working on those teeth either way, may as well use them.
  • Money’s tight right now: Bridge wins on day-one cost. But you’ll be back in 10 to 15 years. Plan for it.
  • Older patient or some health issue: Age alone doesn’t stop you. We’ve placed implants on patients past 80. Diabetes, gum disease, smoking, those slow you down. Not the birthday.
